Join us on October 22 and 23 for the return of TAZ, a two day gravel road tour from Athens to Lake Hope State Park in the Zaleski State Forest! The event includes camping, Saturday chili dinner, and Sunday breakfast. We’ll have group mountain bike rides at Lake Hope, a ride out to the (possibly haunted?!) Moonville tunnel, a campfire, and great company!
The day 1 route will be approximately 28 miles and there will be more trail riding available after you arrive at camp. Here’s the route we’re probably going to do: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/17289580
Things you’ll need
Bring a tent, sleeping bag, clothes for riding and for camp. There is no electric service at the campsite, so bring a flashlight and perhaps a USB battery pack to charge phones. Also bring plates, cups, eating utensils and a collapsible chair. A helmet is required for this ride. You should carry full water bottles and enough food for a 45-60 mile ride split over two days.
A vehicle will carry tents, gear, and other equipment to and from Lake Hope, but will not be on the route to provide sag support during the ride. Ensure that your bike is in safe working order, and carry a spare tube and basic tools with you. Please no private support vehicles on the route. We’ll provide printed maps with cue sheets, but the route will not be marked.
Parking in Athens
Overnight parking is available in Ohio University lot 127 adjacent to the Convocation Center on Ohio University’s Athens campus. Turn off Richland Ave onto S Shafer St and look for the first parking after the Convo driveway on your right. (Google Maps link)
Parking at Lake Hope
If you can’t ride but would still like to camp with us and enjoy dinner and breakfast, there is plenty of parking at Lake Hope. We’ll be at the primitive group camp site that is accessible via a gravel road that starts a little west of the intersection of Long Ridge Rd and Bolin RD / Irish Ridge Rd.
Simply fill out and mail this registration form with payment, or show up the day of the ride. Advance registration is appreciated to help with food preparation. Your $35 registration fee includes both meals, maps, and other event costs.
