Lake Hope mountain bike race
There were 172 racers, up from around 100 in 2013. The park was in great shape and the race went off very well.
There was talk in the past about ABC hosting a mountain bike race but ultimately decided not to due to marketing, time commitments, and the fact that it wouldn’t be part of anyone’s ride series except possibly WVMBA. Additionally, the current Lake Hope race is a favorite among racers.
Current account balance: $3,660.80
We received $775 from the Lake Hope mountain bike race this year, a portion of which will be donated to Friend of Lake Hope and Friends of Strouds Run, as we’ve done in previous years. We received $825 from the race in 2013, with $350 being donated to each of the Friends of Lake Hope and Friends of Strouds Run. In 2012 we received $1,000 with a $400 donation to each Friends group.
Money donated to FoLH is put into their general budget, not necessarily used for cycling-related purposes. Currently there is a big push for playground equipment and funding replacement of some of the equipment which was stolen.
Ryan O’Dell may want a report about what the donated money is being used for.
More discussion about reviving TAZ this September. This is a road ride from Athens to Lake Hope on a Saturday, with overnight camping, and a return ride the next day. The ride is approximately 40 miles each way with minimal sag support. Camping gear is hauled to the campsite by vehicle.
Proposed dates are September 13-14 or 20-21. (Post-meeting note by Dave: September 13 is the Paw Paw Double Nickel ride, which several people are doing.) Need to avoid the Fall Hike at Lake Hope.
We need to check campsite availability and reserve ASAP. Prefer the large primitive campsite. There is an approximately one mile gravel road to this campsite. Chip and Bob will work on getting the campsite taken care of.
Brown County State Park mountain bike trip
Tim Creamer told us about some mountain biking he did recently in Indiana at Brown County State Park and proposed we could turn this into a club trip, possibly in October. The park is near Indiana University near Bloomington, IN, which is about a five hour drive from Athens. There is great hilly road riding in the area as well.
The park is a great place to go mountain biking, with IMBA “Epic Ride” rated trails. Trail difficulty varies from easy to extreme. They have electronic submission of trail hazards including photo upload with GPS location tags.
Tim will bring more info to the next meeting.
The weekly group rides are going well. They are well attended with many repeat riders. Typically between 7 and 14 riders. Earlier darkness may prompt an earlier start time at some point in September.
The next meeting will be a social at the Jackie O’s Tap Room on September 8, 2014, 8:00 PM.
